Michelle Jackson-Blackwell

Certified UX Writer / Content Designer / Interaction Designer

Certified Usability Analyst / Certified Business Analyst / Certified Digital Persuasion Analyst

Summary

My career lives at the intersection of UI content design, UX writing, interaction design, and UX strategy.

I am both creative and analytical. I participate fully in the UX design thinking process, helping to focus and clarify the communication and interactions between product, user, and brand through content design, UX writing, and interaction design on global platforms. I bring my passion for UX, effective communication, and craft building to every team I join.

I've applied UX strategy, UI content strategy, interaction design, and information architecture to mobile/web, desktop, and enterprise solutions for over 10 years -- meeting customer needs and business goals. My career is supported by education, areas of knowledge, certifications, continuing education, and a deep respect for human-centered user experience (UX) design.

What I Do

UX Writing & Content Design. I'm a Certified UX Writer with a background in UX architecture and a love for words. I collaborate with product designers, product managers, developers, UX research, and globalization/localization teams to provide in-product UI content, instructional microcopy, and consistent messaging across the customer journey based on UX strategy and content strategy.

I translate user needs and business goals into contextually clear, concise & straightforward, conversational UI/UX content design for mobile, desktop, and enterprise experiences -- applying UX writing fundamentals, design thinking principles, and interaction design practices to write, edit, and improve UI content and microcopy strings -- for UI flows and related touchpoints according to mobile-first product design strategy, voice/tone & style guidelines, and brand strategy.

Interaction Design & UX Strategy. I understand and speak the language of user-centered design. I partner with cross-functional teams to collaborate and iterate on UX design thinking, UI flows, interaction design, task analysis, functional requirements as we build and improve the customer journey.

I work with UX researchers and data scientists to validate design options and support proposed experience design solutions to improve the user experience -- incorporating feedback from customer personas, qualitative & quantitative UX research, content testing, data analytics, and insights from user testing to understand user needs, actions, and frustrations.

"...Writing UX text is iterative, starting with less-than-perfect words, then replacing those words with slightly better words, and repeating until you find the best words. This is the way to make the text purposeful and protective, but also concise, conversational, and recognizable as coming from the organization's brand..."

-- Strategic Writing for UX

Why I Like What I Do

I'm both creative & analytical. Always have been, and this is why I am genuinely energized by design thinking and UX writing. I'm just as likely to ask questions to get to the root of the pain point as I would be to write microcopy, sketch out a design solution, build a wireframe, or evaluate user tasks and functional requirements.

Making the user experience 'look & feel' easy is actually not easy at all. I consider myself fortunate to work in a profession I enjoy. My years of experience in UX and interaction design, plus a lifelong love for words and affinity for writing and editing, led me on an interesting 'happy path' to content design.

I'm all about collaboration. I believe product designers, content designers, UX researchers, and product managers must work together to create useful, usable, and engaging digital experiences that meet user needs and business goals.

As recommended by the Harvard Business Review, I enjoy working collaboratively with diverse perspectives for creative problem solving of design challenges. I communicate across organizational levels -- from customers to executives -- with a proven track record of successfully completing projects individually, collaboratively, and with remote teams.

Personal Goals & Other Stuff

I'm a book author (or, at least, my alter ego is)... My intuition tells me I'm overdue for writing a book. I've been a reader, writer, and instinctive editor since I was a child. I still remember my grade school literature teacher keeping me after class to say she was moving me up to Advanced Placement (AP) Literature after I turned in my first poetry assignment!

I like HTML. It's actually kinda relaxing... I built and hand-coded this super simple jacksonblackwell.com website you're looking at now. Sure I could use a templated platform, but coding HTML/CSS helps to remind me of what's behind the UI curtain and provides context for working with developers and engineers.

Fun fact about me... I find the human brain fascinating and believe it is the final frontier. There's still so much we don't know or understand about how the brain works. On the path not taken, I might have studied neuroscience.
